There are many options when choosing a process server to serve your legal documents.  In this post, we will explore the many benefits of choosing a local process server to complete the job.

Familiarity with Local Courts

Local process servers often have an already established relationship with their local courts, law firms, and other legal establishments in the area.  This may include standing orders of appointment as a special process server.  As of June, 2026, there are 8 counties in Ohio that require appointment by the court before documents can be sent out for service. These counties are: Franklin County, Cuyahoga County, Montgomery County, Hamilton County, Clermont County, Delaware County, Butler County, and Portage County. Many courts will allow and encourage process servers who anticipate serving a number of cases in their respective counties to file and apply for a standing order for service. This is done on an annual basis and is normally valid for one year. A potential client or legal team need only request a copy of the standing order from the server for inclusion in their motion for a private process server. Capital Discovery Solutions holds standing Orders for service in both Franklin and Delaware Counties.

Efficiency

A local process server will be closer to the destination for service. This eliminates extra time for travel, mileage and other related challenges associated with driving out of town to complete a serve, and sets the stage for expedient and efficient service.  Dealing with a local server directly, instead of a big box store style serving company who will then delegate or offer the job to the lowest bidder often results in a higher standard of service. This is especially true when the server is already appointed by the court, while a national or non local company is not.

Enhanced Customer Service

Choosing a local process server means establishing a business relationship with greater flexibility and options.  Many local process servers will pick up the service packets or documents for service directly from the court clerks or law office requesting service.  In many Ohio counties, this is a requirement. Some local process servers will even offer efiling options for the Return of Service, or simply email them to the entity requesting service.

Communication

A local process server often comes with a personal touch due to the obvious working proximity.  Meaning enhanced communication regarding the job requirements, status updates, or other pertinent information germane to the case.  While instant chats, automatic messaging and pre filled drop down checkbox updates are convenient, a thoughtfully generated email or conversation with a client goes a long way in building trust and reflects professionalism.

Local Knowledge

Often the local process server is also a local resident.  Sometimes a working knowledge of an area’s routines can be helpful when completing a challenging serve.  Think school bus stops and routes, mail delivery, city refuse removal/pickup, and other local factors unique to the locale. Your local process serving company often has other information and knowledge that a National Company may not, such as a new address for service, updated hours of business, or experience with some of the challenges and obstacles that can directly impact deadlines for service. If local court appointment is a requirement before service, your local server likely already meets this criteria.

Cost Savings

Most local servers will work within a predetermined area for a flat fee. With a working knowledge of the locale, additional expenses normally associated with longer travel distances for process service can be avoided altogether. Dealing directly with a local server will very often lead to enhanced service, and a savings in price compared to a national process serving company.

Conclusion:  There are many benefits to using a local process server. Their familiarity with local courts and laws, efficiency, enhanced customer service and  communication, local knowledge of the service area, and savings are just a few of the reasons using a local process server makes a lot of sense when choosing a process server for your legal needs.
